PLANTING CHURCHES AMONG THE LESS PRIVILEGED

“One of the hardest things in the world is to stop being the prodigal son without turning into the elder brother.” - John Ortberg

As we mature in our Christian walk it can become easy to lose sight of those who remain in places of captivity and bondage. Jesus teaches us however, that mature faith will always have vision to search out those who are in darkness and lead them into the light (1Peter 2:9, Luke 1:79).

This vision is helpful in church planting and Kingdom expansion. With this perspective we can determine that the places with the greatest potential of spiritual awakening are the places in which the darkness is most prevalent. In Luke 4:12-21 we see Jesus beginning His ministry on the earth, moving first toward the poor and reminding His disciples that “healthy people don’t need a doctor--sick people do.” Victory Outreach is an inner-city mission that is built upon Jesus’ anointed ministry to proclaim good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for the captives, and release prisoners from darkness. (Isaiah 61:1).

“...as believers we all share the responsibility and mandate to care for the poor and marginalized among us.”

Throughout Victory Churches International, ‘reaching, teaching and mobilizing’ is accomplished with dynamic diversity. Within the global span of our movement it is easy to celebrate how each church is uniquely graced to fulfill their role within the great commission. That being said, as believers we all share the responsibility and mandate to care for the poor and marginalized among us (James 1:27). When we have vision for the poor and move fearlessly toward those who sit in dark places, we position ourselves to model the heart of the Good Father, rather than that of the ‘elder brother’.

Church expansion, in lower socio-economic demographics, requires dependence on God’s supernatural provision and the partnership of many. As Jesus set out to accomplish His earthly assignment, He relied on the generosity of others to come alongside and fund the on-going practical needs of caring for the poor (Luke 8:1-3).
